=========== Josh Adams =========== ===== B.A. Math / Philosophy ===== ========== 205-215-3957 ========== A history... >> Kingwood Christian High School >> Graduated 5/2001 >> Valedictorian, State Basketball Champ, chess club, Tesla Coil > Went to Ireland and London on our senior trip. Hadn't gotten into Princeton or MIT, and wasn't feeling particularly great about going to RPI (in retrospect, probably should've), so while we were on the trip decided to spend some time in Ireland instead. > Built a Tesla Coil using a 15kV/30mA Neon Sign Transformer capable of 27" strikes to a grounded rod. This came in second in a science fair to a kid that did the old standby 'physics of corking a baseball bat' presentation. Kid you not. >> PRIME Engineering Innovation, Inc. >> 6/1998 - present >> Building machinery, wiring panels, programming PLCs, general gopherage > Dad's robotics engineering company. Worked for him through high school, and continue to work as he needs help. Just finished wiring control panels up for three riveting robots that PRIME modified over Christmas at a tier-one automotive supplier. >> Administrative Assistant >> CFI Bible College in Ireland >> 7/2001 - 1/2002 >> Perl, basic IT, wandering the streets of Dublin > Raised ~$10-15k from local businesses to take back to the bible college to build a computer network. Ended up building around 15 machines once I got there. Wrote a perl script to read the proxy logs in order to bill the students for their time online based on the username in the log. Really basic stuff. >> Software Development >> The Contact Network, d/b/a InLine >> 6/2002 - 6/2004 >> HTML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks & Freehand, VB6, VB.net, ponies, >> C#, Perl, MySQL, MSSQL 7, AS/400 integration > Did a couple of stints at InLine (http://www.inline.com). Started out solely as a graphic designer, because that's what they were hiring. Ended up developing web apps and building web sites for companies in the region (worked on ~70 sites or apps during this period). Made a couple of once-off desktop apps for customers. Was forced from linux (Debian, usually) environment into the Wonderful World of Windows. > Worked in a team of three to develop the custom asset management / ticketing application used throughout the company. The app handled on-site billing, technician scheduling, custom reporting. It had an interface (in the form of a nightly data dump) to our DOS RealWorld backend system. Customers could view invoice data directly from our website. It had a module for Sharepoint. This system was rebadged and sold at around $15k a pop. Development time was around six months, with around 50% of development time devoted to that project and the other 50% devoted to money-making endeavors. > Did a lot of e-commerce work, grafting additional features onto iHTML Merchant, which is this horrendous e-commerce system built in a nasty tag-based language (iHTML). > As a contractor after the first stint, spent three or four months as a project lead managing the data retrieval / reporting for a class action settlement money distribution. Basically, a bunch of mind numbing once-off SQL and web apps each of whose lifespan was around a week. Left the first time to open a record store / 'focus on the band' / continue my graphic design contracting. >> Guitar / Vocals >> valign (http://www.purevolume.com/valign) >> 1/2004 - 1/2006, RIP > Heck yes, a band. Weren't very good. Went on a Christmas tour, some kids dug us. Played a few times a month around the Birmingham area. Practiced a lot more. Didn't sound like we practiced as much as we did. >> President / Graphic Designer >> Libero Captivum / design of minD >> 6/2004 - 1/2005 > Rented a store with the bassist, sold some CDs for people on consignment, and just generally tried to make the local music scene better. Did graphic design software development contract work to pay for the bandish efforts and school. Slept in the back room of the store. In disgusting conditions. In violation of the lease, surely. >> Software Development / RFID Specialist >> The Contact Network, d/b/a InLine >> 1/2005 - 1/2006 >> More VB.net, Perl, Ruby, Rails, a failed project, a certification, a revelation > The RFID in the title is a joke. Went to a single weekend class and spent three months studying RFID stuff in my off time, took a few certification tests, and bam, specialist. Built a small VB.NET HTTP polling app to move the data from a webserver-equipped Symbol RFID reader into a database, and built a little RFID.rb class to provide a basic API. Of course Ruby is a scary language to InLine, as they're a Microsoft Gold Partner. They didn't let me finish the ruby interface as they wanted an "Enterprise-Ready" interface. Apparently VB.net is totally enterprise-capable. > In my down time, played with Ruby. Grabbed Rails and started throwing together apps that were much more flexible. We didn't do proper MVC at InLine at the time, and I was finding that I could get 8 times as much done at home goofing off as I was getting done in 8-10 hours of work at InLine. Of course I couldn't expect InLine to shift their development efforts away from the MS world, and instead they asked me to get an MCSD so they could get some extra benefit that Microsoft hands out to companies in order to gain .net developers. I feel I've sinned, as I'm now a Microsoft Certified Professional. Ultimately, the reverence attributed to Microsoft Beloved Status at that place made me quit and start up my software company. So I didn't have to keep taking their stupid tests. >> Lead Developer >> intellect: Intelligent Collections >> 1/2006 - present >> Ruby, Rails, MySQL, vim, Mongrel, Markaby, Juggernaut, WEB_2_O_BUZZWORD[i], AJAX > Developed software to automate small claims procedures thoroughly enough to allow companies to use small claims court in place of collection agencies for their debt collection. This process will provide on average a higher recovery rate for debt in the $300-$2500 range. http://www.intellectsoft.net > Contracted out ruby work for a few projects, and gave a talk on Rails to the Internet Professionals Society of Alabama in which we developed an AJAX chat system in an hour. Didn't have time in the talk to implement the push server that uses a tiny embedded Flash 6 movie (Juggernaut, as the Ruby implementation of this concept is known). Wish I had, it was cool. >> B.A. Mathematics, Philosophy >> University of Alabama at Birmingham > Currently pursuing a master's degree in mathematics as quickly as I can afford to. Also taking programming courses to fulfill prerequisites for more interesting CS courses. My work schedule throughout college meant I didn't attend classes very often. It's what I had to do to afford it, though. >> Co-founder RubyHam - Birmingham's Ruby Users Group >> (http://rubyham.wordpress.com) Promoting Ruby in the 'Ham. Fin.
